New Orleans is a city of contrasts. The famous French Quarter produces so contrary feelings and emotions. I ve caught myself at the conception that I m on the island that is not in the USA. Perhaps this thought appeared for a good reason. The first reason was concentrated on the New Orleans inhabitants. We met basically among them black men, who spoke very strange language. It was very difficult to understand them. In general all these variations of English created in the black suburbs of megapolises and mutated into a special dialect of Afro-American people were hardly enough perceived by usual Americans or Canadians. By the way many people couldn’t understand them. The situation in New Orleans is much complicated: Afro-American language is pronounced here with brightly expressed southern accent. Imagine the words where the consonant at the end are cruelly swallowed and instead of them you hear only the inarticulate mumbling. Well if the conversation turned about the local inhabitants I want to mention the characteristic for New Orleans feature. It consists of a strange undue familiarity and aggressiveness. It strikes you at once. Certainly not every person but the majority that I had a possibility to talk with, began their conversation with a strange scornful tone or just began to outrage without any reason. In the afternoon these people aren’t seen at all, but early in the morning when the streets aren’t filled with the tourists they made up the majority of people on the streets. In general walking trough New Orleans I understood that it is not so unambiguously. I can’t confirm that everything was very bad or contrary very good. Everybody knows the simple principle that our imagination is richer than the reality. Of course when we draw a picture in our mind it is more colorful then the real picture. New Orleans is just right the same thing. The real picture doesn’t match with the imaginary. You can meet the strange contradiction in this city. On the one hand it is a city of great holiday, the sensation of the constant and continuous holiday doesn’t leave you. On the other hand you meet with poverty, dirt and poor conditions of life. Two parallel streets Bourbon and Royal are very different. The first one is dirty, grey and is not remarkable by any sights; the second one, on the contrary, is pure, clean and is rich with art galleries and antiquarian shops. However, the human talk made famous the Bourbon Street. The French Quarter doesn’t come in any comparison with the business centre of the city needless to say about the Garden District. The Garden District is a territory of expensive houses that were built in the colonial style. Garden District is a district for millionaires where every house looks very impressive. The Mansfield Reformatory, also known as the Ohio State Reformatory, was built in the 1880s in Mansfield, Ohio. It is one of the largest castle-like structures in the USA, comprising over 250,000 square feet and combines Victorian Gothic, Richardsonian Romanesque, and Queen Anne architectural styles. This might seem unusual for a correctional facility, and with reason - the original architect, Levi T. Scofield, designed the facility to encourage the inmates away from a sinful life and towards repentance. The prison remained fully operational until 1972 and was completely closed down in 1990. Having gone through considerable deterioration since opening, The Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society was formed in 1995 in an effort to restore the facility to its original state, funding restorations through donations and tour fees. Several tour operators such as Hampton Landmarks offer tours of the Mansfield Reformatory throughout the summer, starting around Memorial Day (the last Monday of May) until the end of September, with tickets being sold on a first-come, first-serve basis from the box office. The names are regal, invoking red carpets, crowns, and other images of pomp and circumstance. From time to time, the doors slide open so people can walk in or out. But for most of us, that view from the outside is all that we see of the members-only airport lounge. Tens of thousands of people belong to one or more airport lounge network in the United States alone, and the numbers increase dramatically outside America s borders. For those who diligently pay their annual members (which may be as high as $400 or more), access to an airport lounge is well worth the price. Then again, there are millions of people who don t belong to an airport lounge. They sit in the terminal, patiently waiting for their flights, and don t seem any worse for the experience. But have they weighed the options and decided the lounge membership wasn t worth the price--or did they just not have enough information to even consider joining? Like most questions, the answer depends on the person. Let s start with some information on what an airport lounge (or "club") is and what services it offers. Each of the seven "legacy" airlines in the United States--that is, the ones that remain from the days of regulation, which are American, United, Delta, U.S. Airways, Northwest, Continental, and Alaska Air--has its own lounges. Major overseas airlines also have their own lounges, and there are several networks of affiliate lounges that belong to airports rather than specific airlines. None of the domestic low-cost carriers, such as JetBlue or Southwest, operates a lounge network. To get into an airport lounge, you need to meet one of several criteria that make you eligible: Members are always welcome. Airlines that belong to the same alliance (Star Alliance, oneworld, SkyTeam) or have specific partner agreements may allow members of their partners lounges to use theirs as well. International passengers traveling in Business or First Class (but not domestic First Class passengers) are typically given complimentary lounge access. Some airlines grant complimentary access to top-level elite members of their frequent flyer programs. Inside a lounge, you ll find a quiet business atmosphere with comfortable chairs, tables, and desk space for laptops. Whenever possible, lounges are built with interesting views. There s usually wireless Internet access; some clubs make it complimentary, while others charge a nominal fee. The same is true for bar service, though a bar is almost always present. You ll typically find at least one television, magazines and newspapers. Snacks, coffee, and non-alcoholic drinks are always complimentary. Airport lounges also offer their members access to private ticketing agents who can process requests for upgrades and seat assignments, make changes to reservations, and handle other services. In keeping with the standard model of giving the best service to the most important customers, airlines tend to put senior-level staff into their lounges, which can be a real benefit if a flight is cancelled or you need to make complex last-minute changes. Great--but as we mentioned earlier, outright membership in an airport lounge system may cost as much as $400 or more per year. So, is it worth it? Maybe. If you travel often, and particularly if you travel overseas or have a lot of layovers, belonging to an airport lounge can provide a very welcome place to collect your thoughts and recharge between flights. Something as simple as a friendly greeting, followed by a cup of coffee and a danish, may change the whole tone of a trip. Frequent flyers who do most of their flying with a particular airline tend to have the most incentive to join their favorite airline s lounge (club). Elite members often get discounts on membership; some airlines let their elite members pay for their memberships with miles rather than dollars. If you fly often but don t use a particular airline, you may be better off with one of the airport-based networks--depending on which airports you use and whether participating lounges are available. In the end, joining an airport lounge is a very personal decision. You re trading some form of currency, whether cash or miles or even brand loyalty, for an upgraded customer service experience.
